How long does weed stay in your system?

Most people try smoking pot at least once at some point in their life, but how long is it detectable in your body? Many jobs require drug testing before hiring and some places will test after you’ve been hired too, so it is good to know how long it will take until your drug test will come back clean.

how long does marijuana stay in your system after smoking a joint or eating an edible?

What factors determine how long pot is detectable in the body?

Trying to pass a drug test after you have smoked a joint can be nerve racking, we understand; that's exactly why we created this list (and video).

Want to know how long before you can pass a drug test after smoking weed? Consider these factors.

  • Frequency/Quantity of Cannabis Use - An every day pot smoker is going to take up to 4x-5x longer to pass a drug test than a person who only smoked a single joint.
  • Strength of the cannabis - Different strains of marijuana have their own unique potentcies and concentrations of THC. The more cannabinoids that enter your system, the longer it could take for your body to clear them out.
  • Rate of metabolism - A slower metabolism could cause THC to take longer to be fully removed from the body. Having a faster metabolism would emit the equal and opposite effect.
  • Body fat percentage - THC is stored in fat cells, so the higher percentage of body fat you have, the longer it will take to leave your body.
  • One-time and infrequent smokers

If you aren’t a frequent smoker and you decide to smoke one doobie with your buddies for the hell of it, the cannabinoids shouldn’t be detectable after about 10 days.

However, keep in mind that all of the factors above affect how long it will actually take your body to completely break down the cannabinoids enough to pass a drug test.

Does secondhand smoke show up in a drug test?

The quick answer is no. If there isn’t enough smoke inhaled to feel the effects of THC, it won’t show up in a test (nor get you high).

Now, if someone shotguns their hit to you (blows it directly in your mouth), yes, it will get you high and will show up in a drug test.

However, extreme exposure to second hand marijuana smoke for 3+ can lead to positive test results if the test is admininstered within 2-6hours. More testing needs to be done in this field for more conclusive results.

How long does THC stay in your hair?

Cannabis has the longest window of being detected in hair follicles, and the hair drug test was initially created to pinpoint frequent smokers.

Cannabis metabolites can be detected in hair for up to 7 days, though first-timers and infrequent smokers are less likely to test positive in a hair follicle test. It takes semi-consistent cannabis inhalation for the metabolites to reach the hair.

Can you speed up the detox process?

The best way to flush THC out of your system is drinking lots of water. Water can dilute the amount of cannabis metabolites in your body. There are also other alternative methods such as detox drinks or herbal supplements.

In reality, the only way to ensure you don’t have THC in your system is to abstain from smoking weed (I’ll pause for your laughter).

There are plenty of different alternatives that exist on the internet to detox your system, but here at Waxxin, we recommend refraining from smoking 3-5 days before your (presumed) drug test and drinks lots of water.
